Knowing your market is something so important. At the start of the net and for many years you could work online and be sort of in your own bubble - lot of people didn't look above their own code editor and as a result a lot failed - I think this is one of the problems of the first internet bubble. Everyone jumped on the band wagon failing to see what was working / what wasn't - it was just a general if it's online it will suceed and all logical business anaylsis was thrown out the window. What I am seeing now is a more cautious approach when developing sites - something that was needed. A return back to the offline marketing and business practices that were missing but required.

The net is a crowded place and only be looking around your corner of it can you progress your site. Yes you can choose not to do but not knowing the competition is a weak excuse now and will show even if you do chose to not use it as any basis for your work. Just like you can't put up a site an expect it to just be a success without marketing / promotion and getting the word out - you can no longer ignore basic business principles of market anaylsis. Even when I'm working for clients this is something I go through.

The role of web designer and developer is blurring into consultant more and more as part of the process. In the Uk consultants still haven't taken off majorly with regards to the internet and webbies are haivng to don that hat to give the user a complete picture of their project. I find it's very very rare I just do a simple design -> static code site anymore. More and more they are about the complete project picture and all that entails.

What we're really doing is trying to figure out the essence of a particular idea, what makes it popular on a gut level, why it's appealing subconsciously, and then we work forward from that.
