I think its a great idea to morph your site with user based content. That would surely make some improvement in regard to the frequency of visitors.

I have jumped onto this phenomena as well.

As soon as I had morphed my site into using mainly user-based content, there was a major improvement with the amount, length, and reoccurrence of visitor sessions.

I think it’s fantastic and it’s what the web is really all about.

Companies r smart enough to generate that content which pulls users towards them. Companies r enjoying success by applying this technique. Once the users interest is built up in the content,then they would definitely go there.

Interest factor is most important. If the users have the interest in the content then they come otherwise they don’t turn up. Companies r generating that content which can attract users. Thats why its prevelant around the web.

I always thought Squidoo was doomed for failure because of the ugly logo. Who would put any hope into a product represented by a flaming eyeball? It’s almost as if to say, “this is what your eyeballs will do when you see this logo.” It has a surreal, prophetic, even mind-controlling sort of effect. Know what I mean?

When attempting to base your business around user-generated content the main question that you have to ask is why would users want to place time into a site and help build up something they don’t own?

In the example of something like YouTube or NewsVine, users are given a free vehicle to show off content they’ve created and subsequently the potential to build a following of regular visitors. For many, that’s incentive enough to sign up. Tenuous ownership of the content doesn’t seem to mean much so long as user Egos are being satisfied and the site is moderately user-friendly. Come to think of it, it’s a pretty straightforward equation which makes me wonder why more mainstream businesses weren’t seizing on this “web of participation” more years ago (though I realize plenty did).

Joe: You are correct and have no idea what I was thinking. Obviously I wasn’t htinking at all.

That’s exactly the point. The users must have a vested interested in the content and when they don’t they just don’t come. The idea of user-generated content is a good one because it makes it seem like no work is required when in fact the hardest part is actually getting the users to post in the first place.

Your main question is a good one.

I’ve spent too many years building empires for other people. My own fault/choice of course… but that’s where most people live.

Kick-ass excellence is the only way I know of attracting people to anything… though admittedly, even this is not enough sometimes.

Is not the key (although pretty hard to attain and requiring a high level of sophistaication) really to get the users to have a vested interest in the content. What I mean is in really what you are saying. It is about either through a sense of belonging or other non profit motivated reasons such as pride, that this dedication and investment occurs. Way I see it that is what the successes have at their core.
