What Is Your Company’s Story?
I have a fascination with company stories. Have you ever noticed that whenever there is an article on a successful company that there is usually a cool story attached to it? Over time the stories become myths with new bits and pieces added in to the point where you don’t know where the truth ends and the story begins. The 9rules Story is a fascinating one when you think about it, but is it true?

In any case having a boring story doesn’t mean success, but can’t part of your brand be the lore behind how the company got started? So does your company have a story and if it does do you like to tell it?

My company is called ‘wideopenspace’, basically I’ve always wanted the freedom of working for myself, or running my own company. The name comes from a greek word which literally means ‘a wide place’ or ‘a spacious place’, so for me ‘wideopenspace’ provides me with an opportunity to express creative freedom. It’s been an interesting time with both highs and lows but I’m excited about the future opportunities available.
http://wideopenspace.co.uk is the url of my company (majorly in need of a redesign!).

My company started when I began writing strange things in the sand at a beach in Savannah, Georgia at the age of 4. My mom asked what I was doing, and my only response was “PHP”. The tide came in and washed it away. I’ve been doing this shit ever since.

I think I might be a poor judge of my company story. For some reason, it was interesting to me at the time, but now that the company is “older”, it just doesn’t seem so interesting any more. Or at least I don’t think people would be interested in hearing/reading it. Might be just because I have told it so many times that it has lost it’s luster for me. Is there a way to gauge the “interest factor” of your company story? A story-o-meter or something?

There are a lot of stories behind my company. Basically, the idea for it emerged out of frustration at having to move back to Jersey after living in NYC for nearly 10 years. I didn’t want to go back to where I grew up and felt there’s just nothing the state has to offer. So, as a challenge to myself (and after hearing that a lot of old friends are sick of going to the same bar/restaurant every week), I started gooutjersey.com with some co-workers (one founder is a native Jersey-ite and the rest are transplants).
I think there are a lot of people who know quirky things about their home town or state, and who doesn’t think Jersey is nothing more than America’s armpit? So, we really wanted to explore Jersey and see if we couldn’t surprise ourselves a bit…So, it’s basically a mutli-authored blog at this point. I’m hoping to expand with more multimedia options later
