Web design is a new frontier in creative designing. It takes a special set of design skills to make an effective web site. A good web site is not just pretty to look at, or filled with a lot of cool Flash animations, it is also easily navigable, with well laid out elements that are not confusing to a person who will visit the site for the first time.

There are so many things that come into play in effective web design that for an aspiring web designer, but if there’s one skill that a web designer must really develop, and fast, is how to deal with customers, especially those that are notoriously difficult to work with. In this infographic from the online publication Top Web Design Schools, the business of dealing with difficult customers is given a tongue-in-cheek, but very informative treatment. Reading through the infographic will give you the necessary information that will help you deal with clients more effectively in the future. As they say, forewarned is forearmed. You can now go to a client meeting with the necessary tools that will help make these meetings more fruitful and definitely a lot painless.

Social media is great for a variety of different purposes. For one thing, you can catch up to a lot of people you otherwise might never get to see or talk to again. For another, you can post all kinds of things about your own life, and let your hundreds of casual acquaintances marvel at how awesome life is for you. On top of that, you can while away thousands of hours pretending to run a farm, command an army, hold together a motley crew of mafioso types, and do a bunch of other things that will ultimately make no difference in your real life. The following are some ways you can avoid doing the time-wasters, so you can use your social media time for more useful things.

Ask yourself what you’ll get out of it

Sometimes the best way to understand how much time you’ve wasted is to assign a numerical value to your time’s value. Imagine you’re used to making $10 an hour. Is spending three hours on that carefully manicured farm of yours really worth $30 to you? While you aren’t actually spending this money or borrowing it from lenders, you also aren’t making it. Considering how many ways there are to make money online these days, that’s a crying shame.

Allow yourself some “wasted” time

If you want to spend an hour or two having some fun and blowing off a little steam, that’s okay. You should never beat yourself up about taking some fun time for yourself, or pretty soon your life will be neurotic and you’ll be a full-fledged workaholic. As long as your fun time doesn’t turn into an excessive amount of time that could be spent on things you need to do, it’s all good.

Don’t worry about time that’s long gone

Maybe you used to waste a lot of time on social media sites, but now you’ve moved on to being a more moderate user. If you beat yourself up over what you used to do, you’ll only make yourself feel bad over nothing. There is no getting back time that’s gone. So you just need to forgive yourself for what you did in the past, and then move on. Fretting over the past is also wasting time.

Social media is a great way to waste time. In moderation, there’s nothing wrong with playing a few silly games. Just be sure you’re doing the things you need to do, too.

Hook up with your favorite brands

Of course it’s no waste of time to follow your favorite individuals and companies, just like you would do in magazines and newspapers. One of the great things about social media is that you can track your favorite products as well- mine being ones like Coca Cola, Ajinomoto and Nike.

All in all..it’s never a waste of time to have fun!

If you put your heart and soul, blood, sweat and tears into a blog (and any dedicated blogger knows that, a lot of times, that is exactly what it feels like), then you know how important it is to amass a readership. You also know how impossible it is to master ten languages while juggling all of the responsibilities of being a blog owner (okay, even if you’re not a blogger, this part is nearly impossible). So how do you reach readers who don’t speak or read your native language? Many bloggers are turning to blog translators to tackle this conundrum. Just as with any other tool you might use to better a process, blog translator tools come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. Before you dive in to the world of blog translation, read up on the pros and cons of using blog translators:

Pros:

Reach. Whichever way you cut it, incorporation a translating tool into your blog is a simple way to make it accessible to people who don’t speak English. It doesn’t matter if your site is about personal finance, insurance, or anything else. If you want to reach an international market, you simply must use a blog translator.

Cost. Hiring a person to translate your blog, and then creating a different web interface for each language, is a very time-consuming and expensive process. Many website translator tools, like Google Translate, for example, are inexpensive to use, making this a relatively simplistic process.

Ease of use. Translator tools are simple and easy to use. You won’t have to take an advanced course in computer programming to make your site multilingual.

Cons:

Errors. It doesn’t matter how great the software is, any time you use technology to do a human’s job, there are bound to be errors. If you want to see just how much translation software can mess up the meaning of your words, go to any foreign site that offers an automated translate option and check it out. Although some of the mistakes are pretty humorous, it’s likely that you’d prefer not to have your words twisted in those sometimes very awkward ways. This page, http://www.ackuna.com/badtranslator, gives you a chance to see exactly what your text might translate to using a technology-based translator. Check it out.

Page layout. Site translation tools can’t adjust your site’s layout for the extra/reduced space caused by translations. Therefore, your site might be a mess after it is translated.

As you can see, using blog translators comes with some clear advantages and disadvantages. Consider these issues before you decide to use a translator for your blog.

1. Show the summary

In your Resume, you will have to show the employer that you have skills. You will have to make it such a way that he will be able to realize almost everything on the CV at a glance. When you are applying for the job of web designer, then your designing skills are more important than Qualifications. So show your skills in it.

2. Do not make it complicated

You will have to keep the Resume as simple as possible. If there is any type of complication, then the employer will not get any interest about it. The main theme of web designing is making things in simple ways, but it does not mean that you will make it like a white paper. Just do not over decorate it.

3. Do not give all the details

In the Resume, you do need to give all the information. You can skip things like your age, marital status and educational qualifications, etc. In case of web designing your portfolio is more important than your qualifications.

Making the proper use of a grid is very important for every web designer. It is one of those qualifications, which is very necessary for every web designer. If you do use grid, it will show your ignorance.

6. Must be printable:

The CV you are making has to be printable. For that you will have to be careful about the size of the paper and you will have to make it is such a way that it can be printed by black and white printer.

7. Linking up with online projects

Link up your portfolio with the projects you have worked. Through it, the employer will be able to check your quality by himself. It will create trust in him.

8. No use of temple:

There will be no use of any temple in the Resume. The temples are common in all the cases. If you use any temple, then it may get matched with someone’s CV. That will be very embracing.

Whether experienced first-hand or heard of in cautionary tales, everybody is familiar with the horror of not being compensated for one’s work and not being able to do anything about it. Enter a possible solution: a remote kill switch, which gives web designers a back door into a client website via PHP, AJAX or CSS to disable it in case something goes wrong, i.e., one doesn’t get paid.

Avoiding the technical details and instead focusing on the general idea of a remote kill switch, let me say this:

It’s a sad, sad reality that people have to resort to these methods, but it’s just a symptom of a bigger problem. I also see it as designers and developers defending themselves with tools they are familiar with, rather than legalese that could only throw them for a loop and might not even work. Which isn’t to say they should abandon the usual way of going into a project altogether; the kill switch can just be an additional safety net.

Is it unethical? There is no reason to use a kill switch underhandedly, or consider it as a sign of distrust or respect. It’s not about having the upper hand or treating clients unfairly, it’s about protecting one’s business. But to earn your keep you need to stay professional, not paranoid. Integrating a kill switch into a contract, where the client is fully aware of the consequences should it be breached, sounds fair and should achieve those two things. One must remember, however, that once both parties complete their respective deliverables, the kill switch must also be killed.

I wonder what percentage and type of web professionals incorporate this into their business process. This is a controversial issue for sure, but I think people can avoid the unnecessary drama if their intentions are sincere. What do you think? Apart from a contract and this kill switch, are there any other ways to protect web professionals from clients running off with their work?

Will Harris shares some insight on working with designers. We often read about tips for designers by designers, but not tips for clients by clients. Still, both parties should read it (and print out the PDF, too!).

Designers (and professionals in related fields) will get great gems of advice that will make them go “oh, thank goodness he said that!” because it’s so common for clients to just sit there and say “I don’t like that” without giving any real reason behind their preference. A design project (again, this can apply to other fields) is the responsibility of both the designer and the client. They have to work together.

But let me digress a little bit. One thing that struck me while reading the article was Will’s first suggestion:

Choose your designer carefully. Look at their previous work. The best designers don’t have a “signature look.” Their sites look as different as their clients do. Awards don’t necessarily mean the design worked for the client. If you’re not sure about a design, go to sites they designed and ask their clients.

Do you agree that designers with more diverse-looking projects are better than those who maintain a signature look? On the one hand, it immediately leads a client into thinking that the designer has a wider skill set and can more easily meet their requirements especially if they’re fickle.

On the other hand, clients opt for designers with a consistent style exactly because they want to emulate that look on their own projects.

I think that in general, professionals start out not knowing exactly what they want to do, and try everything out first. As they grow older they start to specialize. As time passes, you’re supposed to be more sure of yourself and should be able to hold a distinguishable reputation among your peers. This can be said not only about the styles you create, but the skills you specialize in, the clientele you work with, and so on. I wouldn’t say this is the only way to go, but it seems to be the trend.

Do you want an online presence? Build a website. If you want online attention, then you need online media buying. Consider online media buying as the Internet version of running ads on the traditional media—TV, radio, and prints. The purpose is the same; only that the representations and methods are not.

Designing an online ad also starts with framing the perfect strategy. It’s done by establishing the ad’s goal and finding the correct online demographics to reach that goal. And then, the perfect ad will be created. It should be something that will generate favorable results from the targeted niche.Tracking success rate must also be set up while the ad campaign is on going. It’s not solely based on sales, though. Success is based on the website traffic and sales conversion.

But it doesn’t end there.

Since there are thousands of similar businesses out there that are doing the same strategy, it is highly necessary to continuously refine the ad campaign. The more frequent the analysis is done, the better because the online world is a fast-paced environment. Great changes could happen in a blink of an eye. So the planned ad campaign should be checked regularly to see if it’s still giving the expected result. Otherwise, changes on it should take place immediately.

While it’s true that having a website is not enough, the website will still be the landing page of every online ad campaign. That is why Web design/development and online media buying need each other to attain the established goal.

They generally assign all these works to a good blog writer or a company experienced in this field. It is very important to get hold of the right blog writer for your website and hence you need to be very careful when you browse through the vast blog network. You should probably take help of the various blog network guides available online in order to make sure that you get the best quality articles for your website.

Once you are pretty sure about the content of your website the next most important thing that you need to decide is a web hosting service that will host your website so that it is publically available on the internet. Personal web hosting services are becoming more popular nowadays as they are generally less expensive and also customizable. One main issue that you need to consider is the availability of sufficient bandwidth if your website contains videos and other stuff. Hence you can go for personal web hosting provided that it does not compromise with your bandwidth.

Same is the case with website development and web page designing. In order to fulfill the requirement of the above two demanding words an open source website designing application named WordPress was introduced some time ago and which is still highly in demand by the programmers as well as most of the web hosting service providers. There are many web hosting services which provide the feature of instant domain search and they also allow their clients to create webpages almost instantaneously and that too free of cost. These web hosting services can afford these facilities because of WordPress which runs on their servers.

WordPress is, as mentioned above, an open source application which means that it does not require any licensed version to be purchased. This further means that anyone can download the application and can start using it. The best part is that WordPress allows a programmer to create webpages with just a few clicks. Also, several online books and video tutorials are available for the application which a programmer can go through and become an expert on WordPress. Unlike various other closed source web development applications, WordPress has several pre-designed templates which can be downloaded and applied in order to prepare a website or a web page even sooner.

If a person wants to launch his own website he can Google out some renowned web hosting service providers which provide the facility of instant domain search and also allow their clients to create web page with a single click.
