Fark CSS Redesign

Two years ago I redesigned Fark.com with a CSS layout and some tweaks. Here it is again for your enjoyment. Feel free to take the source code and make your own Fark.

Old Fark:

New Fark:

I would work on it some more, but I am working on my own Fark-type site so I think my time would be better spent there.

  2. Oh I didn’t redesign it for them, I redesigned it for me as a fun project. Sorry for the confusion.

*note to self: fix this form to remember info

  3. I like yours way better. (well atleast until I hover over links, they look kinda ugly.)

  4. I think in this case I prefer the old design. Fark.com isn’t exactly a high brow site and I think the original design fits together with it nicely.

People visit Fark armed with tremendous boredom and short attention spams and giving them a design where there are just links that go everywhere and all sorts of random images would satisfy their needs just fine. Introducing structure and cleanliness to it makes the site look like less of a time-waster.

  5. Yours is easier to read, but the original has chicks on the home page. The original wins.

  6. I’m always for making order out of chaos, but I think Jack makes an excellent point. Fark is about having an over-abundance of links to click. Plus as Rob says…the chicks seal the deal.

On the flip side, Scrivs gets kudos for (potentially) killing off one more nested HTML table site with a viable XHTML/CSS upgrade.

Discussions with the owners of the site concerning what they already know about their audience would produce a more appropriate design (look). When your doing a project for fun, ya just gotta go with what your own assumptions are.

  8. The layout mockup you made is much easier to use, at least that’s the way I see it. I’d love to see your FARK-like site. =D

  9. Like you’re design, much easier on the eyes.

I had thought, as more and more sites use CSS to control the layout & look of their sites, would it be possible to use something like greasemonkey, to produce “unofficial” redesigns of live sites?

  10. Speaking honestly, I found no actual changes between old and new one, though updating website design annually is right approach.
