The last of these designs is by Miguel Ripoll--one of my all-time favourite web sites. Great use of type too.

So basically to be an artist you have to draw some flowers and have them coming out of the big rectangle that houses your content? :)

These are all inspirational sites. Though Nick La's stuff is too busy for my taste, it is beautiful.

The 'standard designer' you describe isn't a real designer at all, but an enthusiast or hobbyist designer. There's nothing wrong with that, the ease of creating websites is what makes the web great.

However, design is far more than just "a glorified set of rectangles" and if that's all a designer is producing then they need to go back to college and learn design. Design is about meeting clients needs, balancing them visually to achieve their goals as well as assessing user concerns and tendencies.

You don't need to be an artist to be a designer, but there's no reason you can't work with illustrators and photographers to create more visually impressive designs whilst leading the design process yourself.

I love Nick La's designs.

I definitely prefer the "sketch design" style of sites over the more traditional ones, but imo they are only suitable for a small niche of sites.
