Through the internet you get a very wide audience and for the price asked many people can afford it. Think the exaggeration is to make the theme look even a bigger bargain, like someone telling you can have a Mercedes for the price of a Lada, who wouldn't be tempted? Now I also don't mind that these guys charge money for it, they spend a lot of time on it and Darren's themes are a well worth investment. I do agree that the 10.000 dollar statement is used more then necessary, I also think for such an amount you get a much better support.
