Not many people realise this but the "Metro" design was inspired by Microsoft's Windows Media Centre. So it kind of already is on the desktop, although not at the O/S level, and seems to work quite well.

I think people go for Apple because of the "real design" not the rounded corners and gloss. With the iPhone it's so easy to get from A to B and then C and back to A again. And people know instantly how to do it... now that is design... making something "look good" isn't really design, it's Art.

If Microsoft has really designed the new UI well (people doing what they need to do with ease and no frustration) then it will launch and do well.

Or so I believe. Things can still look amazing but work like crap. People can still have gloss and rounded corners but if they can't get from A to B easily enough then what's the point?

"Lip-stick on a pig... is still a pig".

Sorry if this sounds like a rant. All I'm really saying is if Microsoft thought the usable design then the rest will fall into place.
