I’m Done with Facebook
I never was an avid Facebook user, but now I’m officially done with it. Sure, I’ll probably keep my account around, it updates itself by syndicating my Pownce and Twitter/Jaiku stuff anyway, but any thoughts on actually using the service are cancelled, destroyed, and all out forgotten.
Why? Because it’s spammy crap, that’s why.
First there’s these Facebook Apps. Some are actually quite good and add something, like a charity drive in October for breast cancer, and boxes for displaying your Flickr photos. These are good things, they add to the experience.
Being bitten by a poorly drawn werewolf doesn’t.
Not the tenth Fun Wall invitation, or Top Friends yada-yada either.
I realize that you can use a service like Facebook for several reasons, one being to just kill time. Personally, I don’t think it’s interesting enough for that, I’d rather just play a Tetris clone online or something, or IM a bit, browse around Pownce, or whatever. The web is huge, and while Facebook might be an easy enough way to throw away your day, I’d say it’s only an option because of you being lazy not finding anything better.
Still, whatever floats your boat I guess.
Me, I’m done with it. I’ll keep it around for people wanting to message me, but that’s about it.
2008 is a Facebook free year for me.

Tell me about it.
I’ve emailed facebook to ask them if they had planned to make a function that would block all the application invites. I mean, you can block people and apps one by one, and you can switch Beacon off, so why not offer an overall blockage of these annoying apps. Here is what they replied. Mouais.
Hi Olivier,
Unfortunately, the functionality you are requesting is not currently available. You cannot block all application invitations. However, you can block individual applications from contacting you. To block an application, click on “Applications” underneath the Search field on the left side of any Facebook page. You’ll be taken to the Application Directory.
From the Application Directory, find the application you wish to block. Once found, click on the picture for the application to see its About page. On the About page you will have the option to “Block this Application” on the right side of the screen.
Blocking an application will prevent you from receiving invites to add this application. It will also disable the application from using your information. This means your friends will no longer be able to communicate with you using this application. Finally, it will prevent the application from publishing stories in your News Feed.
Sorry for any inconvenience. We will keep your suggestion in mind, however, as we continue to improve the site. Let me know if you have any further questions.
Thanks for contacting Facebook,

I never got into the whole Facebook phenomena. I only signed up for the same reason I ever had a MySpace account – to keep up with events. I could never wrap my head around people wanting to add every single person they ever made eye contact with to a list of “friends”.
The terrible applications and gratuitous advertising/privacy issues just sealed the deal. Ding dong the witch is dead.

Good luck with that; out of curiosity how do you stay in touch with your friends? Long Christmas cards…

Thanks for posting that, Oliver – interesting read for sure!
Jack, it’s not hard at all. E-mail, phone, SMS… And I did actually send old-school Christmas cards this year, for some reason. I can’t say that Facebook is saving me much time in this aspect, if I write a message to a friend in Facebook, or in Gmail, it’s basically the same. But at least I don’t have to deny as many app requests in Gmail… ;)

Watch out. The Facebook people might get to you. http://www.actiontrip.com/comics/at_comic248.phtml
Well, I’m not usually into self-promotion, but I couldn’t resist this time around.

I wandered onto this page while looking for ways to block facebook invites..I HATE THEM!!! I feel annoyed by them..those application invites. I understand your stress from them..I get one NEARLY each day..I’ve even gone onto my friend’s pages and personally blocked each one on their page (going to all applications on their page and clicking the block button)..doenst help completely tho b/c they end up adding new apps..ugh.
I dont blame you for leaving facebook. I wish you the best. take care. later.

SAME HERE.
My reason? I post things that are especially important to me. I’m basically throwing myself out there, revealing things about me I never thought I would. It’s nothing bad AT ALL… it’s like like a huge deadly secret of mine or anything like that. No one says anything about them. Sure, they’ll write something on my wall, but won’t even BOTHER to look at what I just posted (it’s on my mini-feed… you can’t ignore it). They choose to ignore me. I don’t get any feedback whatsoever.
So what’s the point of continuing Facebook if I don’t get any acknowledgement??
I’M DONE.

I agree but in reality its just a site to stalk old friends and see what they look like…reality is you only chat with your circle of friends.
Check out the funny movie on my take on facebook
