I think is all about who you know and how big their voice is to get you launched. Like if you were to mention my site on 9rules it would possibly catch on. Subject matter is a huge item like you pointed out. You have to have a niche that people care about. Like my most recent project LawnClippings it's a blog on Home & Garden and in my own opinion looks pretty good in comparison to other sites on the same topic (not to many blogs that I have found). It your voice, your contacts and your subject.

I'd say that it's much more difficult to "make it big" now than it was a few years ago. I talk with Paul all the time about how back when he and I were coming up in the industry there were only a few design blogs: Zeldman, Dave Shea, Simplebits, Stopdesign, and Superfluousbanter, or there were other ones but nobody paid attention. Now there are dozens of mega-popular design blogs, but I'd still say none are as popular as those 5 were back in the day.

It's not easier to succeed, or easier to produce. The only thing that has changed is that the distribution channel(s) are more accessible to everyone.

Because of the increased availability and population of content out there, it's going to more difficult than ever to rise above the tide. Only those individuals and companies with a focused vision and solid marketing plan (yep, same as it ever was, as David Byrne would say) are more likely to make it.

That's why I'm working on my 10-year plan right now.

I still don't think it is easier as before because the medium has simply shifted. How many people hit it big on MySpace? What percentage of the now 80 million members? Of all the video content on YouTube, which ones actually hit 100k+ views? Just because the tools are easier doesn't mean it's easier to succeed because everyone is still on a level playing field for the most part.

Now you are correct in stating that communication and collaboration are much easier than before. If you were the only one with these types of tools then yes, being a success would be easier, but that obviously isn't the case.

"The thinking behind Web 2.0 seems to be that anyone can create something successful and with user created content anyone can be become a star."

I think you're overstating your case. In Web 2.0, it's not easy to succeed; it's just easier than before.

Web 2.0, as I see it, is all about enabling people to do things that were harder last time around.

It's easier than it was sic years ago, to get in touch with old high school buddies, check out friends' photos or share your bookmarks with the world, and MySpace, Flickr and de.licio.us are rewarded for building the platforms for doing so.

Good thoughts here man.

Even if lightning strikes, you've got have the goods to back it. And the stamina.

They're not being cute when they call it Show Business.

That Minjas clip is an instant favorite. Thanks for that.

That’s one thing people underestimate with 9rules and that’s the connections we are making. Imagine having 250+ contacts with the ability to spread the word about something you are excited about just one email away.

That's power right there. There's no joke about the reach 9rules has on the blogosphere.
