Web 2.0 Deathlist
A simple weekend exercise that everyone can participate in (hint hint). If you could kill off three Web 2.0 companies, which ones would you pick? My list would be:
- Myspace. Don’t get me wrong, I love the concept of social networking sites, but the designer inside of me dies a little each time I visit a page. And please excuse me for putting Myspace under the Web 2.0 label.
- Facebook. The faster it dies, the faster I can stop reading stories of them turning down gajillions of dollars which causes me to punch walls.
- Technorati. I love the idea of what it can be, but it never quite gets it right so I’m left frustrated every trip.
What would your three look be?

Facebook has a ways to go as far as growth. Unlike myspace, facebook has not reached its prime. So I’ll have to disagree.
My 3 are…
1. MySpace
2. Newsvine
3. TagWorld

YouTube — I’d rather watch it die a quick and painless death than suffer anymore under the merciless, slow and tortuous buzz kill which is the coming of television 2.0
Digg — The arrogance of the user community and their comments is quickly banishing it to hell 2.0
MySpace — The very thought that my 2.0 year-old daughter one day having a profile here sends chills up my spine just like the first time I heard Danny udder uncontrollably, “redrum…REDRUM!”

Myspace – when code went wrong.
Digg – The idea is good, the execution is bad. Some people have way to much power.
YouTube – No more crap.

1. Myspace : I still think every time someone uses it somewhere a designer dies.
2. Newsvine
3. Digg : Due to annoyance again – maybe not death more laughed at and pointed at as a bad example and told to stand on the naughty step until it grows up.
4. (assuming Digg does grow up) Anything done using primary colours and baby talk.

DIGG itself isn’t the problem … the problem is with a few users who insist on BURYING some of the most important stories because they raise uncomfortable issues. The stories get buried just as they are getting a lot of DIGGs from interested readers and they are getting close to making the front page. I hope that DIGG administrators will take some steps to address this.

[...] I found this post over at Wisdump, talking about which Web 2.0 companies should be killed off. Well that is a tall task, I must say. Especially, since it seems that the standard is that I can only pick 3… But I will give it a whirl. [...]

I wrote a little post about this as a response, but the short version goes:
1. Bloglines
2. Rollyo
3. YouTube

1. Studivz.net – Similiar to Facebook, this German “company” has been sold for 100 million Euros a few days ago.
2. Technorati.com
3. Flock – I actually really like it, but there are no extensions available and development takes ages.

1. +1 for myspace; rename it with “waste”space and send to hell2.0
2. payperpost; rename it to “SellYourSoul” and send it to hell again.
3. (I resist to add this because it’s really is a useful resource but anyway…) Digg

1. MySpace – Every time I look at a site from there it reminds me of the 90’s.
2. Flock – Good concept but development sucks.
3. Technorati – Again, good concept but it seems to fall short every time.

I think MySpace is going to die. They’ve become a little too cocky with all their success, and by all means and appearances it looks like they’ve reached the threshhold of unstoppable. But the fall always comes when it’s least expected. With all the money they’re making, it looks like none of it is being invested into making the uberpopular site any faster or easier to use, and with the clearly superior alternatives out there (like Facebook, which has only recently opened its doors to the world at large), I’m beginning to see more and more people leave MySpace in favor of greener grass (at least that seems to be the case within my social circle).
One thing Facebook can do (and should do, in my opinion) is offer more customizable profiles. Obviously not to the extent that MySpace allows, or it will become just as awful as its rival, but a few limited options which would allow one to distinguish their profile would not hurt and would give Facebook one of the few edges MySpace has in terms of features. As a web designer, I did like the fact that I could completely overhaul my MySpace profile (myspace.com/c_vincent), but it’s not enough to keep me coming to that site more often than once or twice a week.

Agreed on MySpace / Technorati. I can’t believe how bad some of the technical issues are at Technorati, but it rarely gets press.
I’d throw my vote against Digg as well simply because the community that is forming around it makes the Slashdot community seem friendly, openminded and informed.

1. Windows Live – You can tell it must die because it has the word “Windows” in it.
2. YouTube – Ok WTF is up with their design? Its like 2.0 and then ugly crap. (Overated)
3. MySpace – Errors everywhere and their scriptors need to et a life and learn to actually script.
