<title>kenobi comments on "User Generated Content"</title>
<link>http://9rules.com/whitespace/user_generated_content.php#c011156</link>
<description>Okay, it stops here.

UGC is all very well and good, but:

1) It&apos;s revenue potential is as yet unproven. Advertisers are running around like headless chickens asking how can it be used.

2) Yeah, power to the people, but as long as UGC consists of 99.9 per cent of utter dross (ie most blogs - including mine) then there will always be a need for a professional to filter for quality content. If I have 10 mins to waste, then I&apos;ll look on YouTube.com. If I want quality programming or journalism, I&apos;ll go to bbc.co.uk. And yes, they&apos;re integrating UGC into their model, but the draw is still quality content. MySpace&apos;s decision to show 24 episodes only reinforces this.

3) I see too many people applying UGC to the core of their site. It&apos;s fashionable yes, but it&apos;s gonna hurt when they find that their boards / blogs are empty. Instead, cherry pick relevant elements.

...gah.

<description>Awww, c&apos;mon, scrivs. The &quot;blogging and design community&quot; are a bunch of boring sheep now, nothing is new, just revisions of revisions and no real innovation, they just wander aimlessly around occasionally following one that says he found some tastier grass. But at least you bite them now and then. :)</description>
