Non-scientific poll: FTP Client

May 17, 2004 | View Comments (96) | Category: Our Thoughts

Summary: What FTP client do you use?

For the majority of my sites I use SCP to transfer files, but everyone once in a while I do not have the luxury and this is when FTP comes into play. JC asked me the other day what FTP client I use and I told him FileZilla. It's an OS ftp client that does everything I need it to do, including automatic reconnects if things time out.

What ftp client do you use?

WS_FTP. Nothing else really comes close. All the others are either feature-lite or not technical looking enough to be a proper FTP client!

I use an older pro edition of CuteFTP. WS_Ftp places log files on the server, the worst feature ever, and it has some majorly annoying event sounds. Not to mention that it uses an out-dated interface, that is in much need of an upgrade.

On OS X I use Transmit from www.panic.com.

Transmit is my FTP app of choice. Does what I need it to do quick and painlessly.

Win - FTP Voyager. Works just fine.

Mac - Transmit. Works great.

For some reason I have always had a thing for FlashFXP. FTP client is not really a big thing to me, persoanlly I have FlashFXP and SmartFTP on this computer. I like both of them.

But then again I would probably be just as happy using a command prompt with the telnet command as my FTP client.

#6

Transmit here too. Bulletproof FTP when I still used Windows.

Derek (http://www.twotallsocks.com/)

#7

Transmit is excellent on Mac. Bulk uploading, favourites list, a host of sensible prefs choices, drag and drop from a fave folder - and plenty more. Works well with BB Edit too...

Mostly I use dreamweaver for normal usage, but when I'm doing lots of files at once or need to modify permissions on the server I need an FTP client.

I used to use WS_FTP pro but when I reformatted my old PC I lost the license... no biggie. Switched to LE... worked ok. But I've been having some serious connection issues over the last few weeks (finally stopped having problems this weekend, comcast finally got their sh*t together I guess), and needed to upload several websites worth of files, one of which was a nuke install so it had hundreds of files... huge headache. Finally was ready to give up when I thought... maybe some other software would give a better result? Downloaded CuteFTP's latest version, and had my stuff up there within an hour or so. It may not look technical enough (but after years of the godawful WS_FTP interface, that's fine), but it worked wonderfully.

I use Dreamweaver's FTP interface ... its really the only thing I use Dreamweaver for nowadays, so I have to justify the cost of the software somehow :)

Its really simple to use and easy to set up.

Transmit on Mac (like everybody else)

[off-topic]

Does anyone know of an Applescript droplet one can use in conjunction with Transmit to automatically upload files to a given web server? My coworkers often need to upload small things to our server, and I want to make this process as easy as possible for them to do. (Okay, so I'm tired of uploading misc. pictures for them myself...)

I use SSH Tectia (SFTP). Before I got paranoid I used CuteFTP.

Scrivs, Transmit is pretty much the only mac FTP client that doesn't crash and works really well. I used ... um ... CyberDuck, or something, but it did simultaneous uploads (which fucked up when you'd upload, say, a folder) and got locked out of my FTP on a regular basis. It also was sort of crash happy.

Transmit is solid, fast (fast fast! surprisingly so.) and interfaces well with external editors like SubEthaEdit and (apparently) BBEdit. Rich developers and their BBEdit. ;)

I keep WS_FTP on my MP3 player - it doesn't need to be installed and keeps my settings & passwords in one folder. Plug it in to any USB port and I'm set.

Bryan Peters (http://www.urbandude.com)

#29

Definitely Filezilla. Has all the features of WS_FTP, almost all the features of CuteFTP, and it's open source and free.

KDE's built-in ftp and ssh/scp functionality is what I use, usually with Konqueror. This also means I can open remote documents straight in my editor, edit and save without even having the document locally...

Transmit, transmit, transmit, and then some more.

It's also got one of the cutest icons on OS X - the little truck just smiles at me from the dock :)

Seriously, the two-window interface is brilliant, easy to use and intuitive as hell. The bookmarks are easy to use, and the instant connect to nearby rendevouz machines is neat.

Chris, how? I thought it was read-only?

#42

I like both Transmit and NetFinder on Mac OS X. NetFinder was my primary until January, but since January I primarily use Transmit (one of the NetFinder upgrades was unstable). I have always loved that NetFinder handles files as if it were a regular Finder window, except that it allows for pre and post processing. It's just Transmit is more stable under Panther, or so it was, I haven't checked to see if a new version of NetFinder is available yet.

Quite often, I'll just use the FTP client that comes with Windows... ftp.exe. There's only a few sites I ever need to work with, and the addresses, passwords and usernames are all easy enough to remember that I don't need any site manager.

If I need to transfer a lot of stuff very quickly, I'll just use Internet Explorer. It's evil, not very full featured, but it gets the job done.

No one has mentioned RBrowser for OS X. It's great for one main reason: multi-column view, just like the Finder. Once you get used it, it's hard to use anything else. Also convienent is the double-click to edit in BBEdit (or default text editor).

I only wish is was faster and a bit more responsive, but I use it every day nonetheless.

Dan Cederholm (http://www.simplebits.com)

#59

I use AceFTP at the present. I used WS_FTP for a while but hated finding log files on the server as mentioned by an earlier commenter. AceFTP does everything I need with no fuss or complications.

Adrian Rinehart-Balfe (http://www.boogenstein.com/)

#60

Yo Adrian! Don't forget to mention the awesome gong sound Ace makes when the file transfer is complete..."BONGGGGG!"

hass (http://hass.spikehost.net)

#61

I'm all over Transmit. I used CyberDuck and Fugu for a while, but CyberDuck didn't save passwords and Fugu only did SFTP. That may have changed now, but at the time, I needed both FTP/SFTP and keychain support so I paided the money for Transmit have haven't looked back. It is wonderful!

On a PC, I used LeechFTP which was pretty good, however, it is only good when you use a PC, which I never do!

Brent

SmartFTP or WinSCP on Windows. I'm looking at FileZilla, though.

I've been using WS_FTP Lite and I'm really not satisfied with it. Thanks for the thread.

What we really need is a good FTP client import-export tool so that when you switch clients you don't have to manually re-enter dozens of sites.

and to top it off, none of them is very long. :-)

Those of you using dreamweaver exclusively -- are you working with an MS server or *nix? Is there a way to chmod in Dreamweaver? I've never seen one, but if there was one, it'd be nice... I hate it when I have to fire up another FTP client just to chmod something.

JC (http://thelionsweb.com/weblog)

#73

Just checked out Filezilla. I'm sicking with it. I have used various other free FTP clients but most are limited in way this certainly is not. Nice full feature set.

#74

FileZilla on windows. I tried it once, and have never looked back. Kicks ass over CuteFTP, WS_FTP and My Network Places.

I haven't settled into a FTP client I love on Linux, but the FileZilla developers are working hard on making their program platform independent, so I'll be sure to send a donation their way.

BTW: just kidding about My Network Places... AS-IF!? Barf!

Justin (http://bluealpha.com/)

#75

On a side note, the ability to CHMOD multiple files and folders at once in Transmit is goddamn handy.

Don't use FTP. Use SSH, it's safer.

I recomend SSH Secure Shell works with ftp and ssh.

I'm a long-time user of LeechFTP but lately it's been bombing on a certain kind of symbolic link (I'm not sure what it is exactly, but the FreeBSD site uses it a lot), so I've been trying out FileZilla. So far, I'm perfectly happy with it.

gftp on Linux, or Konqueror (lets me drag and drop between two remote sites). I like kde's inbuild ftp features. For a quick edit of a web file, I remotely open it in Kate or Quanta+ and directly save it on the host. Nice.

Used to use WSFtp_Lite on Windows.
