Oh GAWDS

Summary: Why GAWDS should have focused a little more on the design.

Note: The original entry was deleted due to the incompetence of my ISP at the time of this writing. Therefore, I can't rewrite the whole thing, but will effectively provide a summary of what I remember.

GAWDS is an organization that is trying to bring accessibility to the forefront of designers' minds. Good. They know that their main audience is designers and they provide a very clear mission statement. They have recently "opened for business", but this is only a soft launch. The problem lies ni the fact that the design does not cater to designers and the site at the time of the writing did not pass the accessibility tests. A redesign contest is on the way, but that is no reason to post such a site for even a "soft launch", especially when there are already designers on board.

The lack of design helps the guild lose a lot of credibility. The fact that they will figure out a way to charge membership after the new design is up makes them even more suspect. It seems they are doing this for all the right reasons, but are just really going about it all the wrong way. Shame.

I had the same feeling about the GAWDS site , let's hope the contest brings up some good designs.
