Summary: Random stuff. Really random stuff.

9rules

Working on branding all the sites across the 9rules Network. New logos have been created that are consistent with each other. Not all logos have been uploaded to all sites. This includes making Arial the default font across all sites (yeah, yeah, I know).

Version 2

11 days left in the Version 2 contest to redesign IMDB.

CSS Vault

Lots of changes coming your way, should be done by 2009.

Traffic and Boing Boing

If you need a lot of traffic quick, get your site listed at Boing Boing. Forever Geek did thanks to JC's article and the traffic shot through the roof. If you haven't added Forever Geek to your bookmarks and newsreaders yet, you should do it now...I will wait...done? Okay. Thanks.

Amazon Wishlist

I added an Amazon Wishlist for no particular reason other than to motivate me into making the money to buy all those toys. But if you wish to purchase everything on there for me go right ahead ;-).

I'm REALLY liking the logo treatment for the 9rules network, Paul.

Simple, but distinctive.

So nice, in fact, that I'll put up with the Arial type. :)

#2

Well I am glad you can put up with the Arial Chuck. I always liked it anyways :-)

Please read: http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=243751

In particular for 9rules.com.

That new 9rules logo is great. Can't wait to see the rest of the branding.

Todd (http://www.monkeyhouselounge.com/loungeact/)

#7

Thanks Anne, should be fixed now. Always fun keeping up with how browsers render everything! *rolls eyes*

The logo is very cool. \(^0^)/ I don't know why, but I like the power and the orange.

#9

simplicity is awesome. looks good.

#10

Just out of interest, do you have a network-wide stylesheet? This could make an interesting case study.

David House (http://xmouse.ithium.net)

#11

Grrrrrrrrrr.

Sorry, inside joke :)

Mike (http://phark.typepad.com)

#12

I really do like the new branding a lot. Your entire network is definitley starting to take shape and come together. Very excited to see what happens next. And is that #900 I see? hehe. yes.

eris (http://www.erisfree.com)

#13

No network wide stylesheet but that would indeed make for an interesting case study.

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#14

You haven't fixed it Scrivs. Did I miss something? :-)

Add 'background-attachment:fixed' or 'html{height:100%}'.

Anne (http://annevankesteren.nl/)

#15

Hmmm, I added html { min-height: 100%} and it worked on my end with the latest Mozilla build. I will add your code though as well for good measure.

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#16

Or my cache is screwed (in multiple browsers) or you didn't use FTP yet :-). ('min-height:100%' would be totally correct btw.)

Anne (http://annevankesteren.nl/)

#17

Haha, well I changed it to height: 100%. You playing games with me today Anne. Geez :-P Clear that cache ol boy.

Damn, you have good taste. I'm tempted to get you that Lain boxed set simply because it's on your list. Too bad it's abnormally expensive...

Oh, and the new logo is swell, but I miss the white space between the words "white" and "space". I thought that simple block of space was a stroke of genius. Really, though, the posts are why I read it, not the logo.

Forrest J

#19

Well Forrest J it seems we were the only two people who liked the former logo. Anyways, the old logo didn't fit the whole branding scheme unless I wished to add the block to every site.

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#20

Oh and yes I like to think I have some good taste. Gotta have my anime!

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#21

So, in keeping with whole "playing it safe" kick - are you out to save the world these days?

All I see, even after refreshing several times are these big honkin' charity ads to help out the "underdeveloped world."

Not that there's anything wrong with that - just curious if that's your intent, or if the ads are goofin based on keywords like "amazon wishlist."

Mark (http://www.lightpierce.com/ltshdw)

#22

Well this entry wasn't really targetted to anything so I can see Google taking its sweet little time trying to find some decent ads. They has some webdesign ads earlier. Let's try this:

webdesign, webdesign, webdesign, webdesign, webdesign, webdesign, webdesign

;-)

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#23

Hey, they're getting closer. Now I see a March of Dimes ad. At least rhymes with web design.

I will never be convinced those things work effectively on sites with ever changing content - like a blog.

Mark (http://www.lightpierce.com/ltshdw)

#24

odd. it's showing an ad for Eric Meyer on CSS for me. And a couple of generic web template places. The fourth one is "america's second harvest" though.

They work effectively on detail pages that have only one given topic. Not so much so on a homepage where the content changes frequently.

JC (http://thelionsweb.com/weblog)

#25

Yeh JC, I'll see the same "correct" ads too (seeing them now, as a matter of fact) but, if I visit this site 10 times throughout the day, I'll see the charitable site ads on average about half of those visits or more.

Mark (http://www.lightpierce.com/ltshdw)

#26

I think this has already been discussed but in the latest over-night build of mozilla the 9rules logo is positioned -50% offscreen. Same thing happened to my site when i updated the browser.

Colin C (http://colincameron.com)

#27

Ugh, this Arial is so intimidating. Where did Trebuchet go?

David (http://www.freepgs.com/individed/)

#28

Hey Paul,

I had not noticed the change in the logo (blame it on rss feeds).

Nice work. It's subtly reminding the old one, but at the same time is coherent with your 'network' concept.

Sh*t, why do *other* people have all the good ideas, and me, none? ;)

s t e f (http://www.nota-bene.org/)

#29

Thanks stef. I only have good ideas (if you can even call them that) because I have nothing better to do with my time than to think of these things. :-)

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#30

Hey Paul -

In Opera, your post title is literally right underneath your logo. Needs some whitespace in there, so it can breathe and be free to grow.

Mark (http://www.lightpierce.com/ltshdw)

#31

While yer at it, in Opera the 9rules logo on the root page is also 50% off screen.

Mike P. (http://www.fiftyfoureleven.com/sandbox/weblog/)

#32

Mike -

What version of Opera and OS are you using? The 9r logo is (and always has been) centered on my screen in IE 6, Opera 7.11 and Netscape 7 on my 2000 workstation and XP laptop at a resolution of 1024 x 768.

Mark (http://www.lightpierce.com/ltshdw)

#33

Funny, after I posted I thought 'hey, I didn't mention the version or OS...'.

I'm using 7.5 on winXP, 1024 x 768. The logo is half off screen (upwards).

Truth be told, I'm having some trouble with Opera and the headings on our blog. Some weird extra padding or something. Everyone else plays nice, why can't Opera?

Mike P. (http://www.fiftyfoureleven.com/sandbox/weblog/)

#34

*gasp as she looks through Scriv's wishilist* You... you like anime too? Cowboy Bebop, oh yeah!!! The rest of your book choices also seem ace. :-) And Triplets of Belleville. I'm totally crushing. Darn my non-single status. ;-)

And I also like the new orange flava. Maybe because I'm getting sick of red, black, and white (it's my company's brand colours and thus... the only things I basically use and am tired of it, haha)

Lea (http://xox.lealea.net/01/)

#35

*blush*

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#36

Hey, I watched triplets this weekend... good example of not needing to know a language to appreciate a movie.

and on the boingboing thing... ::grin:: pretty cool. It's been linked from a bunch of sites, and had some great responses. And absolutely swamped everything you've done there before in terms of traffic. hehehe... you'd better get yourself slashdotted soon, Paul, I don't think your ego will be able to stand anything less.

JC (http://thelionsweb.com/weblog)

#37

Yeah, yeah, you get mad props for the boingboing thing. Geez to I get props for anything...even Bowman is getting mad props now for using such a simplistic, minimalistic design :-P
