Favorite Designs

October 18, 2004 | View Comments (42) | Category: Our Thoughts

Summary: Looking for you favorite designed websites for research I am doing. Any help is appreciated.

I wrote about it 8 months ago and I am going to write about it again because I am doing a search. I am starting a new series of articles and I need help from the audience (as usual).

It's fairly basic, I need to know what your favorites sites are with regards to design. They don't have to be CSS sites and they can be all Flash sites, but I need sites that you go to just to look at the design. Let's assume that if it's in the Vault then I already know about it.

Trust me, this will pay benefits to all later :-) and as usual any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh and please use XHTML link syntax so we don't have to cut and paste.

The just redesigned Hicksdesign is really cool. Very modern, and a welcomed change, even that classic design got pretty boring. My only niggle is that the "listening" cd's don't (yet?) fill up the box with the shadow they're in, but i'm sure that will be fixed.

I am a big fan of 2 Advanced.

Most of these sites are in the Vault. I am looking for non-Vault sites like Bryan and Johan provided. Thanks for the links none-the-less.

Off the top of my head, I remember liking Type Records a lot for its dynamic header image and the gradient background. What's also cool about the header is that it changes with the seasons and time of day.

There was also Design Radar, but unfortunately, it is being re-worked or something. The design I liked isnt' visible anymore.

There are many I forgot the URL (the name also). I'll try to post more later. ^_^

I'm not sure what Scrivs is looking for here, but I think it's be a nice change to not see everyone link the same "top 10" designer blogs every time a topic like this comes up. Yes, they're great. Really great. These guys are my peers and some are my buddies, so I'm not knocking them. It's just that basically anyone at this site probably already knows about Shea, Zeldman, Cederholm, Dominey, Hicks, etc, etc, etc.

Not that I have anything worthwhile to contribute. I'm just sayin'. :)

I have always liked the design of Dean Allen's textism.com and cardigan.com. It was during an accidental visit to these pages that I found his excellent CMS. Simple, clean and classy.

Before I had ever heard of a computer I was all about art and drawing so most of these links I go to more because of the art- but I still really like the web designs.

Once again your timing is spot on, Scrivs. (What's your time and date of birth? Our planets must be well aspected!) Just today I got a comment on my site from
Erick and his linkage site is full of inspirational websites. Linkage is also a great site itself. The two sites featured currently are
Omanaman and Cuban Council, both of which are excellent! I haven't explored the rest of the site yet and perhaps you should understand why.

<rant>
I use a modem and many sites are so slow in loading that I just move on, even if they look like they may be good. I might sound impatient but it is because I get free internet access for < 10 minute sessions. I don't think the time will ever come when everyone will be on broadband, so for me and millions of others, we are never going to appreciate many flash or graphics intensive sites that perhaps more privileged people will. I hope designers will try to reduce bandwidth but I feel that many do not give two hoots about it. So I return the two fingers to those sites on many occasions.

I hope many of the links here are to sites which are beautifully designed AND fast as well! </rant>

Why don't you just take a few hours off and browse some of the existing design portals instead:

design is kinky
computerlove
K10k
styleboost
FWA

(and a lot more...)

You are asking for well designed web sites, and there are literally millions of them... Whatever reason you might have, people have been gathering theese links for 5+ years so it's not exactly a wildly innovative idea. But hey, good luck anyways.

A personal favourite right now: site06

Keystone Ski Resort (Cody Lindley pointed me to that one earlier today)

In fact, go check out his post on ski resort sites. Most are pretty sweet. Especially Jackson Hole. I would just copy the URLs over here, but that would kinda be hijacking the time and effort he put into the post and I'd feel weird about it. =)

Anyway, some others:

Lousco Labradors
Sheryl Crow (don't ask)
Studio Elementik

If some of those are in the Vault already, sorry about that. I'm too lazy to actually check. ;)

I dislike anything which 'spawns' windows. When using MS GUI, there's no easy way to keep windows on top of others (massive design flaw), so they are buried when they lose focus.

A high percentage of flash sites use utterly pointless, time wasting animations which I fail to believe impresses anyone any more e.g. lines spinning about. Boxes, lines, fades, etc. require no talent. There are few sites out there which incorporate discernable talent e.g. hand drawn animation, clever, witty use of graphics.

When I'm looking for content on a site (information) I groan loudly when it's flash. I know it'll be slow, some (if not all) text will be un-selectable, printing won't work properly, back button might not work, my processor will take a battering etc. etc.

Also, a site is 'bad' if it doesn't have a search box on every page.

http://www.apple.com/ - content heavey, but still slim.

There, I've said me piece - off to have some tea.
