First Ever Whitespace Awards

June 21, 2004 | View Comments (32) | Category: Whitespace

Summary: The first ever Whitespace Awards comes and goes with a huge array of surprising selections. Let the controversy begin.

Whitespace Awards

I am taking this as a good sign, but it is getting harder and harder to find topics to discuss concerning web design that haven't been touched on a 1,000 times already. The quality of sites that come across my inbox are getting better and the number of standards based sites is increasing exponentially.

So I would like to take this time to reflect back on the first half of the year with an unbiased *cough* awards presentation. These awards are so crucial to any web designer that I wouldn't be surprised to find that soon clients will only hire designers that have “Whitespace Unbiased Awards Recipient” on their resumes and portfolios. Let us begin.

Best haircutting entry: Cutting your own hair, Dunstan Orchard

Best ego stroking comment: “I want to have sex with the site's design.”, Alanna

Because 34 redesigns isn't good(lett) enough: Justin Goodlett

Dude, you are so screwed because there is no way in hell you can top your first six months: Design By Fire, Andrei Herasimchuk

Best entry title: I would RTFM if there was an FM to FR, Andrei

I really run the vault: Andrew Kempt (averages about 78 submissions a day)

Where are they now?: Dan Rubin

Thought to be a web designer, but proving to be a photographer: Andy Budd

Quickest temper: Andrei

You've gone corporate: Team Bena

Takes life too seriously: 98% of the blogosphere

No way he has a Masters: Scrivs

I have no idea what you do: Scrivs

Played out (guilty): I have GMail invites

Better late than never: Digital-Web Redesign

Dare ya to redesign: Jason Kottke

Gotta read the comments: Calcanis Jumps the Shark?

Stop dogging people: Scrivs

Keep dogging people: Scrivs

Forget entries, I prefer novels: Keith Robinson

Wish you were loud and obnoxious like the guys so you would get noticed: Female designers

Yes you can be great at programming and design: Shaun Inman

Greatest community: Whitespace (gotta problem?)

I think that is enough for the first ever Whitespace awards. All voting was done by a select and highly respected group of individuals that no one has heard of. As mentioned before feel free to post these honors all over your website if you have been awarded.

Feel free to argue the selections or share some awards of your own.

Ohmygod, this is my chance to be the First Commenter on a Whitespace post! What will I say...

Only that Paul, I enjoyed this post. You're spot on about 98% of the blogosphere taking themselves too seriously (guilty as charged).

Keep up the good work.

D'oh!

Damn you Eric...

Richard MacManus (http://www.readwriteweb.com)

LMAO.

Quickest temper? Guilty as CHARGED!

Andrei Herasimchuk (http://www.designbyfire.com)

#5

Oops, a missing quote in the markup has rearranged an award! :)

Because 34 redesigns isn't good(lett) enough: Design By Fire, Andrei Herasimchuk

Say cheese ;-)

Andy Budd (http://www.andybudd.com/)

#8

Good catch. Fixed it.

4 years isn't so bad.

Nick Finck (http://www.digital-web.com)

If anyone has an extra gmail invite laying around, I'll be glad to take it off of your hands. I cant wait to see if it lives up to all the hype.

Josh Jarmin (http://www.radiantrock.com/blog/)

#11

Scrivs, I am always glad to stroke your huge... ego. ;)

Alanna (http://www.virginmoistness.com)

#12

*blush*

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

4 years just implies a cautious and steady nature. Confidence in what you had. Yeah, that's the ticket. Slow and steady...

Tony (http://www.simiandesign.com/)

#14

Are you suggesting I write a book? Or my posts are too long? ;)

If it's the latter, I think Andrei should have taken that one as well. Hell, make it a clean sweep and give 'em all to Andrei!

Keith (http://www.7nights.com/asterisk/)

#15

Well Andrei usually has pictures so I can at least be entertained :-P

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#16

Oh, so now I'm boring...

Maybe I should work on my temper while I'm at it?

Keith (http://www.7nights.com/asterisk/)

#17

Damn Alanna, you got an interesting "domain" there. Hopefully it doesn't get me in trouble with my companies log files :)

Bryan (http://www.juicedthoughts.com)

#18

*cough* yes Keith *cough* /jkidding

I don't feel I should congratulate scrivs on all the awards he won, but rather on being the mirror for the blogging webdesign community, as he manages to put it all into perspective.

AkaXakA (http://www.AkaXakA.tk/)

Keith knows I got nothing but love for him.

And I guarantee next time I don't win as many awards. I definitely got lucky this time around. Again the voting comittee looked favorably upon me it seems.

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#20

"Wish you were loud and obnoxious like the guys so you would get noticed."

Check!

If not... a tad bit inactive lately. *whistles innocently*

Alanna (http://www.virginmoistness.com)

#21

I have no idea what you do: Scrivs

We all know that Scrivs is a hustla. Just last week he sold vinyl siding to a homeless guy.

Ryan Latham (http://worldoneweb.com)

#22

Well then if that's case it's all good.

Alanna, or is this a bot named Alanna? Hmmmm, can't trust anyone on the web anymore.

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#23

Amen to the "Wish you were loud and obnoxious like the guys so you would get noticed" award. Where are all the women in website design?

They are out there - at least half the Web designers I've worked with are female, they just keep a little quiet. And as for the blokes - are we *all* middle-class and white? Sometimes it seems that way.

Richard Rutter (http://www.clagnut.com/)

#24

We need a userati list for designers.

Get on that, will ya? :)

Matthew Oliphant (http://businesslogs.com)

#25

Scrivs isn't really white and is faaaaaaaaar from middle class at the moment. But then again I might not be considered a designer ;-)

Userati huh? I will have to get on it.

Scrivs (http://businesslogs.com)

#26

No, scrivs is greeeen with envy and his hide has been chapped. heh. or is the scoble mockery played out now?

JC (http://thelionsweb.com/weblog)

#27

I98% of the blogosphere take their blog to seriously, surely I fall into that other 2%?!

Lee Hickman (http://oohgravy.typepad.com)

#28

Maybe there needs to be a Userati just for all the female designers so that you guys will quit asking where all the women are. That question is really starting to reach "peeve" levels now.

Eris (http://erisfree.com)

#29

Would it be better if we said "chicks" instead of "women?" Would that be less peevy?

;) !

Matthew Oliphant (http://businesslogs.com)

#30

'Dare ya to redesign: Jason Kottke'

someone's listening...

David House (http://xmouse.ithium.net)

#31

You should have a serious awards ceremony at the end of the year, with a list of 3 nominees for each category that everyones gets to vote on :P

e.g.

Best Designer 2004
Best Newcomer 2004
Most Inspirational 2004

and so on :P

Not trying to take the fun out of your "fun" awards, but it would be nice to have a serious awards "ceremony".

We can all dress up in our Tux's and wait by our computers to find out who won, we could even use I-Sight to make it even more realistic...... going.... too....far.... with..this.....idea
